Winter Fire Safety

Four out of every seven house fires occur between the months of December and February. Many of these are due to unattended alternative heating sources or holiday decorations. Here are a few important tips on how to keep your house safe from fire.
  • Get your chimmney inspected before using the fireplace, and never leave the fire unattended. Keep the area in front of the fireplace clear of flammable material.
  • Always blow out candles before leaving the room. Only light candles on sturdy surfaces away from potentially flammable items.
  • Turn off space heaters when you leave the room or go to sleep, and be sure to set them up in an open space away from possible fire hazards such as blankets or curtains.
  • Don't leave the stove or oven unattended, and don't use them as an extra heating source. Double check before you go to bed or leave the house that everything is turned off.
  • Be especially mindful of children around fire hazards.

These simple steps can keep your family much safer, and ultimately much warmer, this winter.

Why Should You Give?

Why the heck should you give to the American Red Cross? Click here for as many reasons as you could need. If you are convinced, please considering giving to a great cause. As always, thank you so much for all of your support. The Red Cross could not operate without the support of its wonderful volunteers and donors.

Tuesday, September 14, 2010

Greetings! The American Red Cross in St Joseph County, IN, will host a training with the United Religious Community, called FOCUS on Disaster. It will be geared toward religious leaders, lay and clerics, and help to prepare the congregation for in-house emergencies (like a fire at the building) as well as how to participate in the community's response.

Join us on Monday, Sept. 20, 6:30-8 p.m. at the Clay Church, 17646 Cleveland Road, South Bend (note: not the new church but the "Firehouse" on the original campus).

For more info or to enroll: info@stjoe-redcross.org, or visit the St Joe Chapter website, www.stjoe-redcross.org. 574-234-0191 for more...
